INCLUSIONS AND OMISSIONS
I found this line incredibly powerful amid the tale about mutiny and murder. The men on board the Wager were a chaotic collection of souls and yet they were all put on that boat for the sake of an Empire's desire to rule both on land and at sea.
The idea of omitted history feels very relative to American History. How many stories have not been shared? How many stories are being silenced? Although America is not an empire, the same conditions lead to pages being torn out of history books or entire books being removed altogether.
As a battle rages about what people should and should not read, I agree with boundaries but not legislating what people should read and what they should not. I believe we should have our nation’s entire history—the good the bad and the ugly—laid out, and exposed. Only then will we be forced to reckon with our past and pave the way for a better future. A future not destined to repeat previous mistakes, but bravely facing our failures, humble but proud of our successes and recognition a constantly changing world.
